Unreleased Hacker Documentary Leaked

After collecting cobwebs in a studio vault for the better part of a decade, an unreleased documentary on the 2003 hacking scene leaked onto the Pirate Bay Thursday.

Narrated by actor Kevin Spacey, the 90-minute Hackers Wanted follows the exploits of Adrian Lamo, who pleaded guilty in 2004 to cracking the internal network of The New York Times. The film was produced by Spacey’s Trigger Street production company, and includes interviews with Kevin Rose and Steve Wozniak.

Lamo says the film had been bogged down by conflicts among the producers and crew. “It’s ironic that a film about overcoming barriers, about new technologies, about thinking differently, had to come to the public eye by being hacked out of the hands of people who, after making a film about the free flow of information, tried to lock away that information forever,” says Lamo. “The truth tends to itself.”

Hackers Wanted (2008)

This film explores the origin of true hackers vs. today’s computer criminals

by following the adventures of Adrian Lamo and other well-intentioned hackers,

who found security holes and pointed them out so they might be fixed, only to

eventually be arrested. Commonly thought of as computer criminals and vandals,

a true hacker is an innovative thinker able to “hack” himself out of a given

problem or situation, whether it be computer related or not. Historically,

hackers have accounted for mankind’s greatest inventions and discoveries and

yet have repeatedly been persecuted for their new ideas by the powerful and

fearful. Experts on cyber-terrorism also examine our societal view of the hacker

and debate as to whether or not we should recruit and utilize the skills of the

helpful hackers to fight future cyber-wars, instead of continuing to punish what

we do not understand.

hub vs switch – sniffing

Let’s look at the difference between a hub and a switch and how one could attack them. Watch the video to see hubs and switches from a hacker’s point of view. Read the post for a more formal description. (sorry about the quality, still working on perfecting this video stuff)

A hub and a switch have the same purpose; to connect a bunch of computers via ethernet “cross over” cables to create a network. Their main difference is that a switch is much more intelligent than a hub.

On a hub, all of the internet traffic (packets) are sent to every connected computer, where it is determined whether it belongs to that computer. As you may have already guessed, this isn’t very bandwidth friendly and is bad for performance.

Switches are much smarter, they are able to inspect all the headers of the packets coming in and determine where they are coming from and to whom they are destined for. The switch then forwards the traffic to the proper destination. This greatly reduces bandwidth and offers much better performance. For this reason you won’t find many hubs these days, switches are the preferred choice for networks for obvious reasons.

Because all traffic is forwarded to all the machines on a hub, it is very easy to sniff and store the traffic since it just comes to you. The sniffed packets may include website passwords, ftp passwords, the websites the user visits and other personal information.

On a switch, since the traffic is examined and forwarded to the correct machine, how would you sniff it if it doesn’t come to you? Easy, by ARP spoofing. Watch out for a post on that very soon.

BackTrack 4 in VirtualBox

Have you wondered how to get BackTrack 4 running in the easiest way possible? Well you can stop now. No need to burn a disk or install it on your computer just to check it out, you can run it in a virtual machine right from your desktop. Many of you have heard of VMware and looked away because of all the five dolla sucky suckys it would take to afford it. Fortunately there exists a free alternative that is just as good, Sun’s VirtualBox (available for Linux, Mac, Windows) . In this video, I will show you how to get BackTrack 4 up and running in it.. oh and the process is the same for any other OS you wish to run as well.

One more thing… what is a Virtual Machine? Well without giving you a brainfart, it is simply a software that uses your host operating system’s resources (cpu,ram,hard drive) to launch and run another operating system within it. For a more technical explanation check out this Wikipedia article…here….just kidding, I’m going to keep you on this site as long as possible. Muaha, find it yourself! So here’s the video:
